‘No prisoners’ detective Frank Bullitt gets seriously hacked off when an important trial witness is shot while under his protection. Add to this being hassled by an ambitious politician (Vaughn), a girlfriend (Jacqueline Bisset) disturbed by Frank’s job and it’s no wonder he goes all out to catch the killers. Well it gets him out the house.
The car chase through San Francisco is an iconic piece of cinema all the more impressive as it was actually driven and at decent speed, though it left me a little flat: with modern camera work it could be much more pacey. Bisset’s role seems to be to hang about in nightshirts, showing nice legs, but not much character, while Vaughn is suitably oily as the politician. The real star is definitely McQueen, cold, hard, determined and rather catch-a-killer clever.
